In 2014, Jernej Verbuč visited as a spectator a chainsaw speed sculpting competition. He was so instantly fascinated by this relatively young art form that the very next day he tried to make his first sculpture - a horse's head. Today he laughs at this amateurism, but even then, both those closest to him and those who knew the art were impressed by his talent.
Jernej's passion for this hobby grew stronger, he further developed his creativity and soon bought his first professional chainsaw. As the demand for his sculptures grew, his wife Anja encouraged him: "Why not make a hobby your job?" Perhaps it is their combination of talents and the power of respectful cooperation that is the key to success. Anja is skilled in marketing and sales, where her business mindset is felt, while Jernej is at peace creating remarkable sculptures that do not let them go unnoticed.

To date, he has created over 500 unique products, mostly original gifts for special occasions. People also like to commission sculptures for themselves, of course those who are close to wood and to whom this kind of product means a lot. Almost every order has a story behind it, and the products often have sentimental value for their owners. Surprisingly often, people choose to have portraits made of their pets, especially dogs. By far the most popular items are benches or entire garden sets with themed sculptures linked to their hobbies, favourite animals, symbols, etc. They like the fact that the products are not just decoration, but are perfectly suitable for everyday use.
It also works frequently with businesses, associations, kindergartens and municipalities. His sculptures can be found in both private and public places all over Slovenia.
The ideas that can be turned into sculptures with a chainsaw are practically limitless (except for size). One of the smallest products was an owl as a symbol of wisdom for 5KA Publishing, or the heart of Jesus, which was given to the well-known parish priest Martin Golob.
Two projects were successfully implemented with the Postojna Kindergarten in 2023, one of which is the creation of the Jacob's Forest Learning Trail, which is freely accessible to all visitors.
He often participates in local events in Slovenia with an exhibition or a full-day demonstration of sculpture, to which visitors always respond positively. For several years, she has participated in the Christmas nativity scene exhibition in Vojnik. In 2023, the Sostro Equestrian Association organised an event where Jernej made a sculpture of a horse's head in one day, which was sold at a charity auction for an unexpectedly high amount of €7,000. This is a good indication that, no matter what, we still appreciate originality and authenticity, which is also reflected in his sculptures.
One of the biggest projects was the creation of unique wooden structures and sculptures for the Čož Farm. Jernej added his own stamp to the ideas of the owner Jože with a chainsaw and the unique Cowboy Land was created. It is a special place where a successful business story is being written and is still going strong. Always friendly and humble, Jernej is quick to inspire trust, creating stories where business and personal friendships are forged time and time again.
To challenge his creativity a little, he also takes part in speed sculptures around Slovenia. He is a two-time national champion, and has topped the podium more than ten times. "In the future, I would like to participate in more international exhibitions and competitions, but my biggest wish is to visit Canada and compete with the sculptors there; Canada is the cradle of chainsaw sculpture."

The general public at first sight recognises this type of activity as a hobby or an after-hours activity. "But if you put some business thinking into art, even a hobby like this can create a successful business story. You have to learn the basics of business. You can't do without it. For us, it is essential that Jernej remains genuine and that he still loves what he does," says his wife Anja. At first glance, everything seems effortless and easy. "You always have to be creative. When you get stuck, you start to fall in the eyes of your competitors and, even worse, in the eyes of your customers. But despite creativity and hard work, it's important to maintain a high quality of life."
"I never thought I'd ever become a sole trader, but when you're so passionate about what you do, it becomes the only choice.," comments Jernej.
After two years of operation, demand has outstripped its capacity, and currently some people wait more than a year for a commissioned statue. Is there a plan to expand? "At first, we were convinced that it would be necessary to look abroad for such a niche project. But so far Slovenia has proved to be a big enough market. We plan to keep this business 'small and beautiful'.
"Satisfied customers. Grateful recipients of unique sculptures. Love for the work. Endless possibilities for creativity... At the same time, good financial results that allow a life of ease. For us, that's success."
In the future, they want to create a special theme park with sculptures on display. Visitors will also be able to watch the sculpture being made with a chainsaw. This is a relatively unknown art that they want to bring to the attention of the general public.
And most importantly - Jernej will be able to continue doing what he truly enjoys and excels at.
